Do we hope that we will awaken tomorrow, open our eyes carefully, and somehow a very large pinch of magic fairy dust would have transformed this terrible situation into just a bad dream?
If creative children’s authors had written the story, this may have been the preferred outcome, but no, we breathe hesitantly as we start our new day and realise that it is time to wear our big girls (and boys) pants, to consider the multitude of ways that our worlds have changed and plan what we can do to get through this global disaster for our families and friends.
For those of you that have read my books, you will know that the Mindful Fairies are extremely caring and think positive thoughts when faced with problems. In my books for the younger age bracket, Katie needs to be brave when she loses her Red Rubber Ball, and learns to manage change when asked to leave her cherished Blankie at home.
Over the next few months, I will endeavour to share some thoughts through both my “For the Love of Reading” facebook and website. I will co-ordinate some story times, offer fun competitions and provide indoor games to keep the children amused as we are all self-isolating.
In my real career, I am a vocational trainer, teaching emotional intelligence, leadership and advanced training skills, and am totally devastated that my face to face classes are now on hold indefinitely. I am passionate about literacy and numeracy and instilling a love of reading in everyone. I am also an avid reader and devour books at an astonishing speed, so I will share my current reading selections and hopefully commence some positive conversations like a book club chat.
As we embark on educating our own children, and keeping them entertained, let us be mindful of how others are coping in this crisis, and please remember that reading not only generates intelligence and knowledge, but is a genuine Super- power!
